The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society is embarking on a major project to improve and expand its facility on Provincial Road. Our three year campaign goal is to raise $1.85 million, in order to expand the shelter by a minimum of 30 percent. The “Help End the Heartache” Shelter Expansion Fund Campaign is fundamental to the care of 7,000 plus animals that come through our doors annually.
The expansion of our current building will allow us to achieve the following:
- House more animals (approximately 35 percent).
- Provide all animals in our care with ample space to exercise, eat, and sleep.
- Provide enhancements to help us better care for the animals and to make them as comfortable as possible while they are with us.
- Help us to limit the spread of disease with improved medical and quarantine facilities.
- End the needless euthanasia of adoptable cats due to space restrictions.
- Help us continue the success of our “good home guarantee” for dogs by providing more training and exercise areas.
- Provide a specialized care and adoption area for small mammals and birds.
- Ensure that all public areas are fully accessible to disabled and elderly clients.
- Provide a more family and customer friendly adoption centre to increase adoptions.
- Provide a dog walk park complete with raised paths and landscaping for the community.
- Allow us to deliver a public education program, including summer day camps, in the Humane Education Centre.
- Provide space for OSPCA agents to work on cruelty and abuse cases.
- Make the Humane Society a place people will want to visit to find their next companion animal, to volunteer, and to bring their friends for the positive experience.
- Allow us to continue to spay and neuter all adopted dogs and cats to reduce animal overpopulation.
WHERE WE STAND
PHASE 1
Cat Adoption Hallway & Centre
This phase will include visitation areas for cats and dogs, a small animal adoption centre, and a humane education centre. Completion anticipated by April 2010.
PHASE 2
Dog Adoption Hallway & Centre
This phase will include a new dog adoption wing with indoor/outdoor runs for every dog.
PHASE 3
Animal Hospital Focused on Spay/Neuter and Dog Park
Timing for the completion of Phases 2 and 3 will depend entirely on donations. Our goal is to have the last two phases completed no later than the end of 2011, and earlier if at all possible.
BUILDING A LEGACY - BRICK BY BRICK
All donations to the Shelter Expansion Fund are appreciated. In addition to the following Funding and Naming Opportunities the public will be able to donate towards the purchase of bricks (stepping stones) that will be located in the dog walk park. Please click here to download our brochure, and order yours today. P.S. They'd make a great Mother's or Father's Day gift!
