As a charitable organization with limited resources the WINDSOR ESSEX COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY appreciates and depends on the support and assistance of Volunteers. Our volunteers contribute greatly to the success of the Society and, more importantly, to the welfare of the animals under our care.

Your commitment is one of the most essential aspects of volunteering whereby everyone - from our staff to the animals - relies on the dedication of our volunteers. We want the volunteers to have a pleasant experience at the shelter therefore we work with each volunteer to schedule their time on specific days that work best for them and also ensures the shelter has a sufficient amount of volunteer coverage.

Please note:

1.

You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer at the Humane Society. For those of you who aren't yet 18 years old but would still like to help, we offer volunteer hours by helping with our newspaper program. Please click here for all of the details.

2. Our volunteers are in a position of trust because they are involved with innocent animals, as well as with donations. As such, we request an up-to-date police clearance be made available prior to, or at the time of, attending your general orientation training session. Police clearances are required for all volunteers and can be obtained from the Police Services in your municipality. Prices vary however, in Windsor the current price if $15.00.
3. You must provide two references (at least one must be work-related). These individuals will be contacted prior to approval of your application.
4. All new volunteer applicants will be subject to a probationary period. We reserve the right to decline any volunteer application.

By submitting this application, you agree to all of the terms noted above.

Falsified answers will lead to automatic rejection of your application. We reserve the right to refuse any application.

*Please note that once a voluntary sector police clearance has been received and references have been contacted, an orientation session will be set up with the volunteer coordinator.

Volunteer positions can include some of the following:

  • Foster program
  • Adoptions
  • Special events and fundraising
  • Kennel crew - walking, cleaning and caring for our dogs and cats
  • Clerical/administration assistance
  • Humane Education program
  • Rescue Drivers

The following are some of the Steps leading to becoming a shelter volunteer:

  • Volunteers must be 18 years old
  • Possess an up-to-date Police Clearance
  • Up-to-date Tetanus Booster shots
  • Comfortable with animals
  • No known allergies
  • Love and respect of all animals
  • Steps to becoming a volunteer
  • Complete volunteer application (application form on-line), or pick up a form at the shelter
  • Return the signed form to the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society, 1375 Provincial Road
  • Applications will be reviewed and a shelter representative will contact you with the date for volunteer orientation and training sessions
  • Volunteer assignment

We make every effort to make all our volunteers a part of the team. Without our core of volunteers, our pets wouldn't get the love and attention they so desperately need. Once again, thank you for considering volunteering at the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society.
