Shelter Expansion Fund Receives Federal & Provincial Stimulus Funding

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

Kelvin_Apollo_Watson_PupatelloWe are thrilled to announce that our organization received an investment from the Federal and Provincial Governments on January 28.
Below is a copy of the media release from Jeff Watson's office.

Canada and Ontario today announced an investment in partnership with the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society that will expand and upgrade their existing facilities. This total investment of $533,334 will help to create local jobs in Windsor and support animal welfare in the community.

To make the announcement, Jeff Watson Member of Parliament for Essex, and Sandra Pupatello, Member of Provincial Parliament for Windsor-West joined Melanie Coulter, Executive Director of the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.

"I am proud today to be jointly announcing funding for a project that will get shovels in the ground, jobs created, and enable this organization to enhance its services for years to come," said MP Watson.  "Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, our government has announced an historic number of projects to help strengthen our communities, especially here in Windsor-Essex."

"Today's announcement means greater care and protection for lost and abandoned pets, with an expanded adoption facility to ensure that they find homes," said Sandra Pupatello, MPP Windsor West. "This is part of our government's commit-ment to strengthening communities, boosting Windsor's not-for-profit sector, and creating local jobs."

"The staff, volunteers, and supporters of the Humane Society are so excited to see our dream of a better place to care for animals becoming a reality. Phases 2 and 3 of the expansion will include indoor-outdoor kennels for all of our adoptable dogs to give them more space and allow them to better present themselves to potential adopters as part of our new dog adoption wing, as well as a pet-friendly dog park to provide a space for them to get to know their new family," said Coulter.  "These improvements to our adoption program will enable us to better care for dogs in need in our community, as well as to continue to help dogs from other shelters."
The Governments of Canada and Ontario and the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society are each investing one-third of the total project cost.  Canada's funding is part of its new national Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, under Canada's Economic Action Plan unveiled in January 2009.  Ontario's matching contribution is provided through the 2009 Ontario Budget - Confronting the Challenge: Building Our Economic Future.

Canada and Ontario are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that help communities improve their infrastructure.
