The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society was founded in 1926 and incorporated in 1949. Since its humble beginnings in a citizen’s backyard, the Society has been promoting responsible pet ownership, compassion for all living things and a commitment to be involved and make a difference.

In 1971, our present facility opened on Provincial Road and remains one of the largest animal shelters in South Western Ontario. Our shelter is also the centre for animal control in the City of Windsor.

We are affiliated with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) and are members of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. We concentrate exclusively on the needs of Windsor and Essex County.

The Humane Society contract with the City of Windsor provides funding for animal control and a portion of the shelter services for residents of the municipality.

The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society is not a government organization. It is a registered not for profit charity devoted to the prevention of cruelty to animals. The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society relies solely on public and corporate donations, and fundraising campaigns to support its humane operations. The generosity of the community we serve helps us support the animals in our care and allows us to give something back to our community by offering a wide range of programs and services. These services include, cruelty investigations, humane education, assisting distressed and abused animals and our spay and neuter program.

We receive hundreds of calls each week reporting animal problems such as strays running loose, injuries and cruelty and abuse. Many calls are from owners requesting pet care advice. We welcome your calls and are available to answer your questions or refer you to the proper place for assistance.
